Celebrate National Pet Wellness Month
As responsible pet owners, we want to give our pets the best lives possible. October is National Pet Wellness Month, the perfect time to focus on how we can improve the health and well-being of our pets. With a few small steps, you can have a big impact on your pet’s wellness.
Visit the vet: If your pet is overdue for a trip to the veterinarian, take action and schedule an appointment. Regular veterinary exams are an important component of your pet’s wellness plan. During these exams your veterinarian will thoroughly assess your pet’s health, administer recommended vaccinations and answer any questions that you might have about your pet. This is an excellent opportunity to identify and remedy any current health issues, as well as prevent future potential health issues.
Help lost pets return home: Is your pet microchipped? If not, consider scheduling a microchip appointment at a local microchip clinic or with your veterinarian. Pets who are microchipped have a significantly higher chance of returning home if they become lost than pets who are not microchipped. If your pet is already microchipped, check the contact information that is in the microchip database to ensure that it is accurate and up to date.
Spay or neuter your pet: If your pet has not yet been spayed or neutered, this is a great time to consider taking the step. Not only does spaying and neutering prevent unwanted litters, it can also have positive health and behavioral outcomes for many pets.
Promote pet safety at home: Protect your pet from hazards at home by removing any dangerous household items from areas that your pet spends time in. Plants, medications, chemicals, cleaners and human food are all common household hazards.
Spend quality time with your pet: Spending time with your pet is a great way to enrich their life. Whether they enjoy quiet affection, walking around the neighborhood or playing fetch in the backyard, giving your pet the attention they desire is important for their overall well-being.
Healthy eating: Providing your pet with a healthy diet of quality pet food is very important. If you are not sure which pet food is best for your pet, ask your veterinarian for a recommendation. You can help pets maintain a healthy weight by sticking to a proper feeding schedule, not overdoing it with treats and avoiding feeding them table scraps.
Support shelter pets: There are also many pets in local shelters that could benefit from your help. You can improve the lives of shelter pets by volunteering, fostering or donating. Volunteering opportunities might include dog walking, cat socializing and event support. Fostering is an excellent way to enjoy the company of a lovable pet while they await their forever home. Every donation, large or small, helps pets in need live better lives.
Our pets make our days so much happier. The least we can do is return the favor by making time for their health and wellness needs. Take action during National Pet Wellness Month and develop healthy habits that you can continue throughout the year.
