Kathy Snowden, ABCDT has been involved with dog training and the APF for over 20 years. Her commitment to training evolved from seeing first hand so many dogs given up because of behavioral issues that the owners did not know how to address. Kathy develops and continues to update the training program to meet the needs of the dogs and the dog owners. Her goal is to keep the dogs in their homes and to help bridge the communication gap between human and canine. Kathy is a certified AKC Canine Good Citizen Evaluator. Kathy is certified by the Animal Behavior College as a Dog Trainer and a Shelter Dog Trainer. She also serves as a mentor to future dog trainers with the Animal Behavioral College.

Puppy Basics
Register(Puppies up to 16 weeks)
Description: A socialization class amongst puppies and humans. Common puppy issues will be addressed along with a solid training foundation.
Duration: 6 weeks, 45 minutes+
Additional Information: Dogs will come to ALL six sessions. Your instructor will contact you prior to week one with pre-class instructions.
Requirements:
- Open to all puppies up to 16 weeks of age at the start of class.

Adolescent Socialization
Register(5 months - 1 years)
This class is primarily for puppies coming out of Puppy Basics to continue their socialization skills. This class is designed to focus on setting your puppies up for success in structured social settings. It is an off-leash class where puppies can
continue to socialize and learn from one another, parents learn about play behaviors, canine body language and more. This class does not address problem behaviors, or focus on obedience. It is meant as a social transition between Puppy Basics and Basic Manners 101. All social dogs are welcome from 5 mos to a year old, even if they have not taken Puppy Basics. This is not the appropriate class for reactive dogs. Dogs MUST be social with other dogs to attend this class.
Duration: 6 weeks, 45 minutes+

Basic Manners 101
Register(6 months +)
This class will teach you how important it is to understand what your dog needs, how your positive guidance on a daily basis helps them deal with any situation, increase your communication between you and your dog, observe and learn from your dogs body language and how to train in basic cues (focus, sit, down, stay, wait, come, leave it and loose leash walking) to help with your goal of having a well-mannered dog.
Duration: 6 weeks, 45 minutes+
(Week 1 NO dogs)

Basic Manners 102
Register(1 years +)
This class will create a stronger relationship between you and your dog. We will build on previous training and bring it to the next level. This class addresses issues such as door dashing, pulling on the leash, impolite greeting and more! You and your dog will work through distractions in many forms, achieving solid stays and sharper recalls at longer distances and improving their focus on you. You will achieve a more respectful relationship with your dog.
Duration: 6 weeks, 45 minutes+
Dogs attend all 6 weeks.
Requirements:
- Open to all ALTERED Dogs 1 year +, with solid knowledge of basic commands (sit, stay, down, wait, come). To all graduates of Basic Manners 101, this is perfect for you!

- Bordetella (for kennel cough) is HIGHLY recommended.
- Flea and tick prevention is REQUIRED.

Small Dog Manners
Register(Small dogs 6 months +)
All small dogs need to be able to take direction. Even though they are small, they still need to be trained to have good manners for their safety and to feel confident and know what to do in different environments. Training a small dog can be a challenge but well worth it! Some small dogs are fearful, cautious and reactive. Reasons are many . . . things in their environment, under-socialized and genetics all play a part in their fears. If they continue to live in fear, it can keep them “stuck” and might even add to their fears. The goal of this class is to build confidence through basic dog training cues that you can rely on and have a deeper and healthier relationship going forward.
Duration: 6 weeks, 45 minutes+

- Open to all small dogs (up to 25lbs)
- All dogs must be ALTERED

Nosey Dogs
Register(6 months+)
Your dog will have fun as they sniff out food, toys, and scented objects. Using their nose helps build confidence, stimulates their mind and channels their energy.
Duration: 4 weeks, 45 minutes+

Barks & Recreation
Register(1 years +)
A fun relationship booster of the human-canine relationship! This is a great way to expend your dog's mental and physical energy and a great opportunity to sharpen basic obedience cues too. We play games, tricks, and dance in a very informal and strictly fun and safe environment!
Duration: 4 weeks, 45 minutes+

Canine Good Citizen Certification Class

The AKC Canine Good Citizen certification program is a 10-item skills test that promotes solid manners as you train your dog to become a polite member of society. This class will prepare you for the test and CGC certification.
Duration: 6 weeks, 45 minutes+
Dogs attend all 6 weeks and on the 7th week a test will be administered by a certified CGC evaluator. There will be a separate $10 fee at the time of the test.

- Knowledge of basic dog training cues such as Sit, Down, Come, Wait and Stay.

Recall Class
Register(6 months +)
There are many reasons that you would want a reliable recall from your dog but especially when it comes to their safety and a much-improved communication between the both of you. Through positive reinforcement and engaging in a fun way, your dog will run to you when they hear the cue COME! Recall Class does require that your dog know basic cues that will be used during our Recall Games to enhance their learning. Recall training does require lots of consistency to help your dog understand that coming to you is the best thing to do! As the weeks progress, we add in distractions that challenge you and your dog.

Agili-O (Summer Class)
Register(1 years +)
Our unique and FUN class combines an informal Agility course and some basic obedience cues. You and your dog will burn off lots of energy, build on your relationship in a fun and positive way and share a great opportunity to continue dog training together. The focus is on strengthening your dogs obedience skills while learning how to navigate basic agility obstacles: jumps, tunnels, A-frame, weave poles, etc.
Duration: 4 weeks, 45 minutes+

Walking Workshop (Summer Class)
Register(6 months +)
To a dog, walking on a leash does not come naturally but it’s a very important skill for your dog to learn. Proper leash training opens up a world for you and your dog to explore together. This class will train you on how to guide your dog to walk by your side and do it around distractions as you and your dog develop good walking habits. Start to enjoy your walks and have fun doing it by learning some walking games and tricks too!
This class is not for aggressive dogs

Canine Winter Fun
Register(1 years +)
A beneficial winter fun obstacle course class. Each week you and your dog will engage in a different course as well as keeping up with your basic training. This course will help your active dog release some winter energy.

- Open to all ALTERED dogs 1 year+.
- All dogs should have solid basic training.
- Dogs must be under owners control as this will be an exciting environment for dogs.

About Canine Academy
Training is a very important part of dog ownership, for dog and owner alike, and the Animal Protective Foundation is proud to offer a bounty of classes through our Canine Academy program. The program offers classes such as Puppy and Adolescent Basics, Basic Manners 101 and 102, Canine Good Citizen, Therapy Dog International, and much more!
The Canine Academy is staffed by professionally certified and seasoned trainers who help owners better understand their beloved companions by teaching them to think like dogs, and by helping dog and owner to cultivate trust and respect for one another, thereby strengthening their relationship.
Our approach to training is a motivational one, always using positive reinforcement to achieve success. Training with the APF also helps homeless pets, as 50% of your tuition benefits the shelter.
