When you see an animal available for adoption at the Animal Protective Foundation, you’re seeing them at one moment in their journey. What you don’t always see are the days, weeks or sometimes months of care that helped get them there.

Every animal who comes through APF’s doors has different needs. Some arrive healthy and ready for their next chapter. Others need medical treatment, time to build confidence, behavioral support or simply a safe place to rest and adjust.

No matter their story, there is a lot that happens behind the scenes before adoption day.

It Starts at Intake

When an animal arrives at APF, our team begins by learning as much as we can about them. Their health and individual needs are assessed so we can create a plan for their care.

For some animals, that plan is relatively straightforward. For others, we may discover needs that require additional attention—from dental disease or infections to injuries or other medical concerns.

And while all of that is happening, there are the everyday necessities: a clean and comfortable place to stay, nutritious food, fresh water, bedding and daily care.

Medical Care Can Look Different for Every Animal

Preparing an animal for adoption often includes vaccinations, spay or neuter surgery and other routine care. But shelter medicine rarely looks exactly the same from one animal to the next.

An animal may need diagnostic testing, medication, dental work, surgical treatment or ongoing monitoring. Some arrive needing immediate care, while other medical needs are discovered during their stay.

Our veterinary and animal care teams work together to make sure each animal receives the attention they need before moving on to their next home.

Caring for More Than Physical Health

A shelter animal’s well-being goes far beyond medical care.

Enrichment, exercise, socialization and behavior support are important parts of each day at APF. Dogs may enjoy walks, playtime, training or activities that keep their minds busy. Cats benefit from opportunities to play, explore, climb and interact at their own pace. Small animals have their own enrichment and care needs, too.

For animals who need a little more support, our team spends time helping them build skills and confidence that can make the transition into a new home more successful.

Sometimes the most important thing we can give an animal is simply time.

There Are People Behind Every Second Chance

Every clean kennel, medical treatment, meal, enrichment activity and adoption involves people dedicated to making it happen.

Veterinary professionals, animal care staff, adoption counselors, behavior and training professionals, volunteers and others throughout APF all play a role. Behind every adoption photo is a team that has spent countless hours caring for that animal and preparing them for what comes next.

And that work happens 365 days a year.

Adoption Fees Are Only One Piece of the Puzzle

Adoption fees help support the care animals receive, but they do not represent the full investment that may go into an animal during their time at APF.

That is where our community makes an incredible difference.

Donations, sponsorships, volunteers and fundraising events help provide the resources APF needs to continue saying “yes” to animals who need us—whether their stay lasts a few days or much longer.

Fur Ball Helps Make This Work Possible

On October 3, our community will come together at Rivers Casino for APF’s Fur Ball, our biggest night of the year.

It’s a night to celebrate, but it’s also a night that directly supports the work happening at APF every day.

The tickets purchased, auction bids placed and donations made help provide food, shelter, medical care, enrichment, behavior support and so much more for animals waiting for their next chapter.

Because the real cost of caring for a shelter animal isn't just one meal, one vaccine or one night of housing. It's everything that animal needs, for as long as they need us.

And none of it would be possible without a community that believes every animal deserves that chance.
