Caring for Pets, Strengthening Communities: A Look Back at Our June Wellness Clinic
Meg Thomas

On June 15, 2026, the Animal Protective Foundation (APF) hosted our latest Community Pet Wellness Clinic at Steinmetz Park in Schenectady. Despite being short-staffed and limiting services to pre-registered appointments, our dedicated team was still able to provide wellness care for 32 dogs and support the families who love them.

For many pet owners, these clinics offer more than routine veterinary care—they provide access, education, and peace of mind.

Why Community Wellness Clinics Matter

Every pet deserves access to basic preventive care, but for many families, transportation challenges, financial limitations, and a shortage of available veterinary appointments can create barriers to receiving timely services. APF's Community Pet Wellness Clinics help bridge that gap by bringing affordable preventive care directly into neighborhoods throughout Schenectady County.

At each clinic, pet owners have access to services such as:

  • Vaccinations
  • Booster Appts
  • Microchipping
  • Basic wellness exams
  • Preventive health education
  • Connections to additional APF resources and programs

By providing these services in community-centered locations, we help keep pets healthy, comfortable, and safely in their homes.

Preventive Care Saves Lives

Routine wellness care is one of the most effective ways to protect pets from preventable illnesses and identify health concerns before they become emergencies.

Vaccinations help prevent serious diseases, microchips increase the likelihood of lost pets being reunited with their families, and regular health checks allow veterinary professionals to catch potential issues early—often before pets show visible signs of illness.

When pet owners have access to affordable preventive care, entire communities benefit. Healthy pets are less likely to enter shelters due to medical challenges, and families are better equipped to provide lifelong care for their animals.

A Community Effort

These clinics would not be possible without the support of our community partners, volunteers, veterinary staff, and host locations. Together, we are creating opportunities for pet owners to access critical services while strengthening the human-animal bond that makes our community so special.

While we were proud to serve 32 dogs at our June clinic, we know the need continues to grow. Every clinic demonstrates just how important accessible veterinary care is for local families and their pets.
