When we think about things that could harm our pets, most of us picture obvious dangers—cleaning chemicals, medications, or antifreeze. But many pet poisonings happen because of common household items that people never realize are dangerous.

Here at the Animal Protective Foundation, our goal each year is to help even more animals find loving forever homes, and I’m happy to share that we are on track to increase adoptions by 9% over 2024. This progress reflects the dedication of our incredible team — and the compassion of the many people who opened their hearts and homes to new furry family members.

Animal Chronicles with the Daily Gazette: As winter settles in to the Capital Region, the season brings sparkling snow, holiday spirit — and often dangerously cold temperatures.

While our pets might look winter-ready in their fur coats, they feel the chill just as much as we do. As the weather turns frigid, it’s important to keep an eye on the hazards cold weather can pose for our furry family members.

Celebrate National Train Your Dog Month - Animal Chronicles

One of the greatest joys of having a dog is the bond you build together. Over time, with a little patience and consistency, that bond grows into a shared understanding — a kind of “language” that’s unique to you and your dog and makes everyday life better for both of you.

Training your dog isn’t just about teaching commands. It’s also about learning to truly see your dog. As a dog owner, you start to notice how much they communicate through their eyes, ears, tail and body. Paying attention to those signals helps you understand what your dog needs, what excites them and when they might be feeling unsure. That awareness can make training feel more natural, more successful and a lot more enjoyable.

The Animal Protective Foundation proudly stands as the region’s largest public spay/neuter provider thanks to our community clinic, which performed nearly 4,000 spay/neuter surgeries in 2025.

There are no restrictions on who can schedule their pet for surgery at the Community clinic, although qualifying pet owners can benefit from the New York State Animal Population Control Program, covering a substantial portion of the costs and making it affordable for everyone.

The Animal Protective Foundation exists because people believe that animals deserve dignity and a second chance.

During the past year that belief showed up every day — through adoptions that turned fear into love; through donations that became lifesaving medical care; and through volunteers who gave their time, patience and compassion to animals who needed it most.

Because of you, thousands of animals were met not with indifference but with care, and not with uncertainty but with hope.

Protect Your Pets from Ticks and Lyme Disease

Warmer weather has many of us looking forward to spending more time outdoors with our pets — whether it’s longer walks, backyard playtime, or weekend adventures. However, as we become more active outside, so do ticks. Once temperatures rise above freezing, tick activity increases significantly.

Ticks live in tall grass, brush, and wooded areas, waiting to latch onto passing animals or people. They can remain on clothing or fur for hours before attaching to skin. Once they bite, ticks inject an anesthetic so the bite often goes unnoticed. Their saliva also contains an anti-clotting agent that keeps blood flowing and helps anchor them firmly in place. If left attached, ticks can transmit serious illnesses, including Lyme disease.

For pets, ticks can easily hide in thick fur. Not only can they attach to dogs and cats, but they can also hitch a ride into your home and potentially make their way to human family members. This is why it is so important to thoroughly check your pet for ticks after every outdoor outing. If you discover one, prompt removal is key. Experts believe ticks generally need to be attached for several hours before transmitting infection, so removing them as quickly as possible can significantly reduce the risk of disease.

Lyme disease in pets may cause swollen joints, lameness, lethargy, fever, loss of appetite, and swollen lymph nodes. In addition to Lyme disease, ticks can also carry other serious illnesses such as ehrlichiosis, anaplasmosis, and babesiosis, which can lead to further health complications if left untreated.

Given the prevalence of ticks in our region, keeping your pet on a consistent flea and tick preventive is extremely important, especially if they spend time outdoors. There are many options available, including collars, topical treatments, and oral medications. If you’re unsure which product is best for your pet, your veterinarian can provide guidance based on your pet’s age, health, and lifestyle.

As Dr. Sos DVM, Veterinary Medical Director at the Animal Protective Foundation, explains, “Tick prevention isn’t optional—it’s a vital part of protecting your pet from painful, preventable diseases like Lyme. A simple monthly preventive can save your pet from serious health complications down the road.”

If you find a tick attached to your pet or yourself, proper removal is essential. Shield your fingers with gloves or a paper towel and use fine-tipped tweezers to grasp the tick as close to the skin’s surface as possible. Pull upward with steady, even pressure. Avoid twisting, crushing, or squeezing the tick’s body, as this can increase the risk of infection. Do not use petroleum jelly, hot matches, or alcohol, as these methods may irritate the tick and increase the chance of disease transmission. After removing the tick, disinfect the bite site, wash your hands thoroughly, and give your pet a well-deserved treat for being a good patient.

The Animal Protective Foundation wishes you and your pets a warm, sunny, and safe spring. With a little awareness and prevention, you can enjoy the season while keeping your family protected from ticks.

As responsible pet owners, we want to give our pets the best lives possible. October is National Pet Wellness Month, the perfect time to focus on how we can improve the health and well-being of our pets. With a few small steps, you can have a big impact on your pet’s wellness.

           Visit the vet:

If your pet is overdue for a trip to the veterinarian, take action and schedule an appointment. Regular veterinary exams are an important component of your pet’s wellness plan. During these exams your veterinarian will thoroughly assess your pet’s health, administer recommended vaccinations and answer any questions that you might have about your pet. This is an excellent opportunity to identify and remedy any current health issues, as well as prevent future potential health issues.

           Help lost pets return home:

Is your pet microchipped? If not, consider scheduling a microchip appointment at a local microchip clinic or with your veterinarian. Pets who are microchipped have a significantly higher chance of returning home if they become lost than pets who are not microchipped. If your pet is already microchipped, check the contact information that is in the microchip database to ensure that it is accurate and up to date.

           Spay or neuter your pet:

If your pet has not yet been spayed or neutered, this is a great time to consider taking the step. Not only does spaying and neutering prevent unwanted litters, it can also have positive health and behavioral outcomes for many pets.

           Promote pet safety at home:

Protect your pet from hazards at home by removing any dangerous household items from areas that your pet spends time in. Plants, medications, chemicals, cleaners and human food are all common household hazards.

Spend quality time with your pet:

Spending time with your pet is a great way to enrich their life. Whether they enjoy quiet affection, walking around the neighborhood or playing fetch in the backyard, giving your pet the attention they desire is important for their overall well-being.

           Healthy eating:

Providing your pet with a healthy diet of quality pet food is very important. If you are not sure which pet food is best for your pet, ask your veterinarian for a recommendation. You can help pets maintain a healthy weight by sticking to a proper feeding schedule, not overdoing it with treats and avoiding feeding them table scraps.

           Support shelter pets:

There are also many pets in local shelters that could benefit from your help. You can improve the lives of shelter pets by volunteering, fostering or donating. Volunteering opportunities might include dog walking, cat socializing and event support. Fostering is an excellent way to enjoy the company of a lovable pet while they await their forever home. Every donation, large or small, helps pets in need live better lives.

Our pets make our days so much happier. The least we can do is return the favor by making time for their health and wellness needs. Take action during National Pet Wellness Month and develop healthy habits that you can continue throughout the year.

Our canine companions bring so much joy to our lives. If you have been considering adding a new pet to your family, now is a great time to do so, as October is Adopt a Shelter Dog Month. Let’s take a look at some of the many reasons why adopting a shelter dog is a wonderful decision.

           Saving lives:

When you adopt a shelter pet, not only are you saving its life, you are opening a space for another pet in need to enter the shelter so it can also find a forever home.

           Unconditional love:

It’s true — pets genuinely love their humans. When your day just isn’t going the way you wanted, you can feel comfort knowing there’s a loving heart just waiting to greet you at the door and spend some quality time with you.

           Exercise partner:

Your new pet will want to stay active — which means you get to stay active, too. Whether it’s a walk around the neighborhood, a weekend hike or playing fetch, your body will thank you for exercising with your pet.

           Best friends for life:

“Man’s best friend” isn’t just a saying, it’s the truth. Your pet will be your BFF through thick and thin, always there to lend a helping paw.

           New social opportunities:

Believe it or not, your pet can help you make new friends and see people more often. A day at the dog park is a great way to meet people who share your love of animals. Plus, you never know who you might run into on your daily walks.

           Lower cost:

Adopting a shelter pet costs less than buying from a breeder. In addition to monetary savings, when you adopt you are also supporting the good work of a local community organization rather than encouraging breeding.

           Resources and support:

The animal shelter you adopt from can be a valuable resource and support system for owning and caring for a pet. Many shelters offer programs such as wellness clinics, microchip clinics and training classes.

           Quality care:

When you adopt a pet you can feel confident knowing it has received high-quality care during its stay at the shelter. This puts the animal in a position to live a healthy life when it leaves the shelter for a forever home.

           Adoption advocacy:

By adopting a pet you are setting an excellent example for your peers who might also have an interest in adopting. Showing them how amazing your shelter pet is and how great life is with your new companion in it can be reassuring for those considering adopting.

           An excuse to shop:

Do you enjoy shopping but need a good reason to do it more often? Look no further — your new pet will happily accept being showered with gifts. Bring on the toys and treats!

Happy Healthy Cat Month a Good Time for These Reminders

September is Happy Healthy Cat Month, an opportunity to shine a spotlight on all of the ways we can help our cats live a long and fulfilling life.

Let’s take a look at how pet parents can best care for their feline family members.

           Quality time:

Giving your pet a little attention is an easy way to help them feel happy. Whether your cat prefers quiet cuddles or chasing toys, dedicating time to their favorite activity is an excellent way to celebrate Happy Healthy Cat Month together.

           Spay or neuter:

If your pet has not been spayed or neutered yet, consider taking this step as a responsible pet owner. Spaying or neutering your cat helps prevent unintentional pregnancies, reduces certain health risks and decreases potential behavioral issues.

           Vet visit:

Taking your cat to their veterinarian on a consistent basis is one of the best ways to keep them healthy. Routine exams are an opportunity to identify and resolve any health issues that your cat might be experiencing, while vaccinations help prevent unnecessary health issues from occurring.

           Keep it clean:

Keeping a clean litter box is very important for your cat’s well-being. Your cat’s litter box should be cleaned at least once per day, with a weekly deep cleaning.

           Proper grooming:

Establish a grooming routine to help keep your cat clean and happy. Weekly brushing (more frequently for long-haired cats) removes dirt, grease dead hair and skin flakes, as well as stimulates blood circulation. Monitor your cat’s ears for wax, debris and infection. Trim your cat’s nails every 10 days to two weeks, or as recommended by your veterinarian or groomer. Also, integrate at-home tooth brushing into your cat’s care.

           Healthy diet:

Your cat’s nutrition is an essential component to their overall health and happiness. Feeding them high-quality food that meets their nutritional needs is very important. If you are not sure which pet food and what feeding schedule is best for your pet, ask your veterinarian for their recommendation. Be sure to avoid any human foods that are toxic to cats such as chocolate, onions, garlic, grapes, raisins, raw eggs and raw meat.

           Enrichment:

Providing your cat with activities they enjoy is a great way to keep them happy. Items you might try adding to your cat’s environment include scratching posts, climbing structures and toys.

           Safety:

A safe cat is a happy cat. Ensure that the areas of your home where your cat might spend time are free of any potential safety risks such as toxic foods or materials, open flames and unsecured exterior doors. If your pet is not microchipped, take this action to help them return home if they ever become lost. If your pet is already microchipped, make sure your contact information is up to date in the microchip database.

Let’s make this Happy Healthy Cat Month count by taking these simple steps to help our cats live their best lives. If you have any health concerns regarding your cat, make a call today to your veterinarian.

           Exercise:

Regular exercise is very important for happy, healthy dogs. Exercise not only keeps them in good physical shape, it also keeps them mentally stimulated. Discover what kind of exercise your dog enjoys most by trying activities such as walking, running, hiking, playing, swimming and agility exercises.

           Veterinary care:

Regular veterinary checkups are critical to your dog’s health. This is an opportunity for your dog to be thoroughly checked by your veterinarian; to receive any necessary vaccinations; to address dental-care issues; and to answer any questions you might have. Your veterinarian can also recommend flea and tick preventatives for your pet.

           Wellness:

In addition to regular exercise and visits to the veterinarian, there are additional steps you can take for your dog’s wellness. Regular nail trims, baths and tooth brushing are all important. Spending quality time with them is also essential to their emotional well-being.

           Healthy diet:

A well-balanced diet that is appropriate for your dog’s age, size and breed is very important. Ask your veterinarian for their thoughts on which pet food and feeding schedule is best for your dog. It is also important to not feed them any human foods that are unhealthy or unsafe for pets, and to not over feed them with their pet food or treats.

           Training:

Proper training helps your dog stay safe through basic commands such as sit and stay, as well as through recall in the event that you need them to return to you. Training is also a great way to bond as well as provide mental enrichment. The Animal Protective Foundation Canine Academy offers several training classes in the Capital Region.

           Safety:

Inside the home, baby gates and doors are ideal for keeping pets out of any areas that might not be safe for them. Food and drinks should be kept out of reach of pets. Garbage cans should be covered so that pets cannot get into them. If anything is a danger to your pet, it should be inaccessible to them. Outside the home, keep your pets safely where they should be with a secure fence. Your pet should also be microchipped in case they become lost, and your contact information in the microchip database should be kept up to date.

           Emergency preparedness:

When creating an emergency plan for your family it is important to include your pets. Make sure you have ample pet food and water. Have all of your pet’s important paperwork in a safe, accessible place. Put contact information for your regular veterinarian and a local emergency veterinarian in your phone. Create a pet first-aid kit that stays wherever your pet may be.

Taking these steps will help keep your pet safe, happy and healthy. Let’s all do our best to be responsible dog owners. Our pets deserve it.

Community Clinics Help Pets in Need

At the Animal Protective Foundation, our mission is to ensure that every companion animal in our community is cared for, loved and has the chance to find a forever home. Through adoption services, veterinary care and community outreach, we’re dedicated to improving the lives of pets and the people who love them.

Throughout the year APF holds a series of community clinics to provide important medical care to local dogs and cats. These clinics include our microchip clinic, pet wellness clinic and spay/neuter clinic.

A third of all dogs and cats in the United States go missing at some point in their lives, and the sad truth is that more than 80% of missing pets never make it back home. The good news is that microchipping your pet greatly increases the likelihood of them being reunited with their family if they go missing. According to the American Veterinary Medical Association, 52% of lost dogs and 38% of lost cats with microchips were reunited with their owners, versus just 22% of dogs and 2% of cats without microchips.

When a lost pet is brought to a shelter or veterinarian they can be scanned for a microchip, which will provide owner contact information that is stored in a database. Microchipping your pet is highly recommended. Our microchip clinics offer low-cost microchipping for dogs and cats. The next microchip clinic is Oct. 24 at Capitaland Motors in Schenectady. Registration is required at animalprotective.org/news-events.

Our wellness clinics are a great opportunity for members of our community who are financially struggling to take advantage of wellness and preventative services to help their pets live a healthy lifestyle. So far this year we have helped more than 350 dogs and cats at our clinics. These clinics include free vaccinations, free microchipping, a free mini checkup by a veterinarian, free pet food and free flea/tick preventatives.

Our next wellness clinic is for dogs only and will be held Sept. 15 at The Bridge Church in Mont Pleasant. Pre-registration is highly recommended at animalprotective.org/news-events. Our pet wellness clinics are made possible by the generous support of the Banfield Foundation.

APF also offers affordable spay and neuter services. Our community spay/neuter clinic is a high-quality, high-volume clinic focused on controlling pet overpopulation through lower-cost sterilization surgery. So far this year our clinic has performed more than 2,000 low-cost spay/neuter surgeries. Appointment availability can be found at animalprotective.org/spay-neuter.

Of course, these clinics wouldn’t happen without the amazing APF team and volunteers who come together to help thousands of pets in our community every year. We are incredibly proud of their dedication and compassion for animals in need.

Pet Vaccinations Should Be Kept Up To Date. Find Out How.

August is National Immunization Awareness Month, the perfect time to review your pet’s vaccination schedule.

Just as with humans, vaccinations protect pets from many serious illnesses by strengthening their immune systems. Vaccinations introduce antigens, which are harmless versions of disease-causing agents, into the body. This generates an immune response that prepares the body to defend against future infections.

Puppies and kittens should receive their first vaccinations when they are approximately six to eight weeks old. After their initial vaccinations they will also need boosters every few weeks until they are approximately 16 to 20 weeks old. Completing the entire vaccination series will give your pet the best protection.

Adult dogs and cats also require ongoing vaccinations, typically annually. The frequency of each booster will vary based on the type of vaccine and veterinarian recommendations.

Common vaccinations for dogs include Rabies, DHPP (Distemper, Hepatitis, Para-Influenza, Parvo Virus), Leptospirosis, Bordetella, Influenza and Lyme.

Common vaccinations for cats include Rabies, FVRCP (Feline Viral Rhinotracheitis, Calici Virus, Panleukopenia), FeLV (Feline Leukemia Virus) and Feline Bordetella.

Which vaccinations are best for your pet can vary based on age, breed, medical history, lifestyle, travel and local laws. It’s best to discuss your pet’s vaccination needs with their veterinarian.

Pet owners might have concerns about the safety of vaccinations. It’s important to know that these vaccines have undergone extensive testing and are considered safe for administration in healthy pets. Vaccines might have some side effects, but they are generally mild and temporary. Your veterinarian will be happy to answer any questions you have about the vaccines your pet should receive.

By keeping your pets on a proper vaccination schedule you can help them live a longer, healthier life. Keeping your pets vaccinated also helps protect humans and other pets they might come in contact with. Together we can promote better health for everyone.

Keep Your Pets Hydrated During the Heat of Summer

It’s been a hot summer so far in the Capital Region, with many days seeing temperatures into the 90s. July is National Pet Hydration Awareness Month, the perfect time to take a pause and think about how we can keep our pets safe throughout the remainder of summer. Pets should always be kept adequately hydrated, of course. However, summer is an even more critical time to pay attention to your pet’s hydration as temperatures and humidity rise.

Pets need sufficient water in order to regulate body temperature, transport nutrients and oxygen, moisturize the air in their lungs, and support the nervous system. Pets are very susceptible to dehydration which can lead to heatstroke and many other health issues. Insufficient water in cats can lead to urinary blockages. Dehydration in pets can quickly become deadly.

Signs of dehydration in pets include excessive panting, dry nose and gums, sunken eyes, lethargy, loss of appetite, vomiting and decreased skin elasticity. If your pet begins to show signs of dehydration, get them fresh water and a cool place to rest immediately. If their condition does not improve, it may be time to contact your veterinarian.

There are many ways that pet owners can promote hydration in their pets. First and foremost, always make sure that your pet has access to clean, fresh water whether they are indoors or outdoors. Water bowls should be washed regularly with hot soapy water to prevent mildew from forming. The location of your pet’s water bowl can also influence how much they drink, so if they seem to not like going to the location that it is in consider moving it or adding additional water bowls in different locations. Wet food can also help hydrate your pet, especially in cats that tend to not drink enough water.

If you are traveling with your pet, bring a water bowl and bottled water. Never leave your pet in an unattended vehicle. The temperature inside a car can rise 20 degrees in just 10 minutes, quickly making for a dangerous environment for pets. Schedule walks and outdoor activities strategically to limit how much strenuous activity takes place during the hottest parts of the day. When your pet is outside, be sure to provide plenty of shade and rest breaks.

We still have many hot summer days ahead of us, and likely several hot days during autumn as well. Learning the signs of dehydration in pets and implementing proper hydration practices year-round will help keep your pet safe, healthy and happy.

Take Steps to Prevent Your Pet from Becoming Lost

As pet parents, one of our greatest fears is losing our pets. Each year, more than 10 million pets become lost. July is Lost Pet Prevention Month, the perfect time to consider how you can take actionable steps to prevent your pet from becoming lost. These steps are easy and something we can all do for our furry family members.

Pet-proof your home by securing all entry and exit points. This means that doors, windows and gates should all be closed and latched. Proper fencing should be installed in your yard at a sufficient height, and it should be inspected regularly for holes and gaps. Cats can even escape through small openings such as an exposed vent or fireplace.

When outside the home, pets should be supervised at all times. If you bring your pet beyond your fenced yard, always keep them on a leash. Take into consideration where you are bringing your pet. If you are attending an event that is loud and noisy, it might be best to leave your pet at home where they are safe and calm.

Recall training teaches your dog to run to you when they hear the cue “come” through positive reinforcement and engaging in a fun way. This helps promote safety and improves communication between you and your pet. The Animal Protective Foundation offers recall classes through its Canine Academy program. For upcoming class dates, visit

Spaying and neutering your pets can help calm their desire to mate, decreasing the chances of them escaping in search of a mate. Spaying and neutering can also help decrease the likelihood of behavioral issues that make them less likely to listen to commands.

Microchipping your pet and attaching ID tags to its collar are easy and effective ways to reunite you with your pet if they do become lost. Make sure your pet’s microchip and ID tags are up to date with your current contact information. If your pet is not yet microchipped, consider attending an upcoming microchip clinic at the Animal Protective Foundation in Glenville. The next clinic is set for Aug. 15 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Registration is available online at

By taking these proactive steps you can help prevent your pet from becoming lost. After all, a safe pet is a happy pet. Let’s work together to keep our furry family members safe and secure.

Summertime means barbecues, vacations, outdoor parties and highly anticipated fireworks displays.

With Fourth of July fireworks approaching, it’s important for us to remember the well-being of our furry friends during the dazzling displays. The loud noises and bright lights can cause anxiety and stress for our pets. Animals who are normally laid back can become terrified during fireworks, trembling and showing signs of intense distress.

Here are some helpful tips to keep your beloved companions safe during this festive time.

           Keep them indoors:

The idea of having your pup sitting on a picnic blanket with your family during a fireworks show might sound like fun, but loud explosions and big crowds could be your pet’s worst nightmare. We’ve all seen the dog at a fireworks show who is frantic, panting, drooling, whining and trying to escape. Even when viewing the show from your backyard, Sparky might still try to desperately flee. It’s vital to keep your pets indoors during fireworks displays for their protection. Ensure that all doors, windows and pet gates are securely closed to prevent any escapes.

           Identification:

In case your pet does escape, make sure their collars fit well and include up-to-date identification tags with your contact information — and make sure they are wearing them! For additional peace of mind microchipping is highly recommended, as it provides a permanent form of identification. You can schedule an appointment for microchipping at the Animal Protective Foundation.

           Create a safe haven:

Prepare a safe and cozy “den-like” space inside your home where your pets can seek refuge during fireworks. Offer this safe space to them several hours, or even days, before the fireworks show. Choose a quiet room and provide their favorite blankets, toys and water. Close the windows and draw the curtains to reduce the impact of noise and flashes of light. This comforting space will help alleviate stress and create a sense of security for your pets.

           Mask the sounds:

To minimize the impact of fireworks noise, turn on the television or play some calm music to help drown out the sound of fireworks. Background noise can provide a sense of comfort and distraction for pets, helping them cope with the outside commotion.

           Provide distractions:

Engage your pets with interactive toys, puzzle feeders or treat-dispensing items to divert their attention from the fireworks. Chew toys, stuffed Kongs or frozen treats can keep dogs occupied and mentally stimulated. For some dogs, peanut butter or cheese might not be enough to get their minds off the noise. Try something really tasty and special such as tuna, a mashed-up hot dog or freeze-dried liver treats. For cats, offer interactive toys, new foods like sardines or chicken baby food, and hiding places to provide a sense of security.

           Stay calm and reassuring:

Pets are perceptive to our emotions, so staying calm and composed during fireworks is crucial. Act as a source of comfort by remaining at their side, speaking softly and offering gentle strokes. Your reassuring presence will help your pets feel safe and secure during this stressful time.

           Calming techniques:

Consider using calming techniques to help soothe your pets’ anxiety. There are various products available, such as anxiety vests, aromatherapy sprays or pheromone diffusers specifically designed to promote relaxation. Try these items before the day of the fireworks in a calm setting so that your pet will associate them with relaxation. Your veterinarian can recommend the most suitable options for your pets’ needs.

           Consult your veterinarian:

If your pets experience extreme fear or anxiety during fireworks, consult your veterinarian. They can provide professional guidance and may recommend medications or natural remedies to help alleviate your pet’s distress. Your vet will likely suggest first trying new medications on a normal day to see how your pet will respond, then adjust any dosages as needed. For most medications the key is to give the dose an hour or two before the fireworks actually begin, as drugs can be less effective if an animal is already stressed.

Armed with these tips you can help keep your furry friends calm and safe during this fireworks season. Your love and care will make a world of difference. Enjoy the festivities knowing that you have prioritized your pets’ well-being and safety.

What would you do if your pet became lost? Fences, collars and leashes can fail. Doors and gates can accidently be left open. Pets can get scared or distracted and take off.

Some pets like to explore. Your pet becoming lost is a scary thought for pet owners, but microchipping your pet can help reunite you with your furry family member.

According to the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA), it is estimated that 10 million dogs and cats are lost or stolen every year in the U.S. An AVMA published study found that just 22% of lost dogs entering shelters were returned to their families. However, that number increased to more than 52% when a dog was microchipped.

Microchips make a huge difference in bringing lost pets home.

June is National Microchipping Month, an excellent time to think about how you would bring your dog or cat home if they were to become lost. Microchipping is quick, easy and permanent. The process takes just a few seconds and involves implanting a microchip under the pet’s skin. This microchip contains a unique ID number that is registered in a database, along with the owner’s contact information.

Here at the Animal Protective Foundation every shelter pet is microchipped before they are adopted. If a lost pet is brought to a shelter or veterinarian, they can scan the microchip and retrieve the owner’s information. Microchips can’t fall off the way a collar with ID tags can. They are permanent and do not require any maintenance. It is important, however, to update your information in the microchip database if there are changes to your home address, phone number or email address.

Getting your pet microchipped is easy. You can ask your veterinarian to microchip your pet at their next appointment. There are also microchip clinics put on by local organizations such as the Animal Protective Foundation. We help pet owners in our community get their pets microchipped at our free Community Pet Wellness Clinics and discounted microchip clinics throughout the year. The next Community Pet Wellness Clinic (cats only) is June 23 from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at Steinmetz Park in Schenectady. The next microchip clinic is Aug. 15 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at APF in Glenville.

Bringing Your Pet to a Public Event

Spring and summer bring many wonderful events to the Capital Region such as the Animal Protection Foundation’s Woofstock Music Festival and 5K Walk/Run on June 1 in Collins Park in Scotia.

Public events can be fun to bring your pets to, but it’s important to keep a few important considerations in mind so that it results in a safe and enjoyable experience for everyone.

The first step is to check if the event is pet-friendly. Once that’s confirmed, consider your pet’s comfort level in public. Are they ready for an event with many new people and other pets? If you feel they might need a little practice first, try a low-key outing at a park, where there is a smaller crowd, to see how they do.

Once they have successfully acclimated, graduate them to a more sizeable event and see how they do in that setting. It’s best to take it one step at a time rather than overwhelming them with an environment they are not ready for.

Before you begin your outing make sure you have everything your pet might need. Essential items include water, a travel bowl and waste bags. Opt for a nonretractable leash so that you can maintain proper distance and control at all times. Training treats might also be helpful.

When in public with your pet, watch their body language to see how they’re doing. If your pet is still or stiff when being approached by someone new they might be uncomfortable, and it would be best to politely decline the interaction.

Other signs of discomfort include pinned-back ears, showing of teeth, growling and shaking. When in doubt, comfort your pet and remove them from the situation if necessary.

If your pet is going to interact with someone try not to let them jump, especially if it is a child, older adult or person with mobility issues. If there is a child present, get low so you can manage the interaction and be prepared to gently intervene if necessary.

It is also important to be considerate of other pets. Every pet is different, and you should never assume they are comfortable being approached or interacting with other pets. It is best to maintain a safe distance and only approach if invited by the pet’s owner.

If you would like to bring your pet to a fun event, the Animal Protective Foundation is hosting its fourth annual Woofstock Music Festival and 5K Walk/Run in the Lions Pavilion at Collins Park in Scotia on Sunday, June 1.

Protecting Your Pet All Spring and Summer

Spring is in full swing and summer is around the corner. As we spend time playing outside, going on trips and taking extra-long walks, it’s important to consider potential hazards for your pet and ways to keep them safe.

           Heartworm:

Heartworms are spread by mosquitoes, which we have plenty of here in the Capital Region. Heartworm preventives work by treating heartworms that have already infected the pet within the past month or longer. It is important that preventives are given on time and year-round to be effective. There are many types of heartworm preventives such as monthly chewable pills and topical medications, as well as an injectable medication that is administered every six or 12 months.

           Fleas and ticks:

Fleas and ticks reside in the grass and brush waiting to attach to a passing animal. Fleas cause discomfort and itching, can transmit diseases such as tapeworms and could lead to anemia. Ticks can put pets at risk due to the diseases they carry such as Lyme. It is very important to check your pet for fleas and ticks often. If you discover a tick on your pet, remove it quickly to minimize the chance of disease.

Lyme disease in pets can cause swollen joints, joint pain, lameness, lethargy, fever, loss of appetite, swollen lymph nodes and more. Ticks also carry other illnesses such as ehrlichiosis, anaplasmosis and babesiosis. Having your pet on a flea and tick preventive is important if they go outdoors. There is a wide variety of collars, topical treatments and oral preventives available.

           Overheating:

One of the most common warm-weather dangers for pets is overheating. It doesn’t have to be a scorching day for your pet to overheat. Make sure they aren’t spending an excessive amount of time in the sun. Ensure that they have access to clean, fresh water. Never leave your pet alone in a parked car. Signs of overheating include panting, difficulty breathing, increased heart rate, drooling and weakness.

           Water Safety:

Summer means time spent by the pool, lake or ocean. Some pets enjoy the water, which is wonderful. However, it’s important to protect your pet from a water-related accident. First make sure the water temperature is not too cold in order to avoid hypothermia. Then, slowly introduce your pet to the water in a shallow spot. Never leave your pet unattended in or around water. You might also consider a life jacket for your pet. Have fresh water available so they do not drink pool, lake or ocean water.

The Animal Protective Foundation wishes you and your pets a safe spring and summer full of adventures and memories!

Pet First Aid Can Save Lives

April is National Pet First Aid Awareness Month, an excellent time to consider whether you are prepared for an injury to your pet.

While we always hope our pets will remain safe, pet injuries are not uncommon. From eating something harmful to overheating on a hot day to falling and suffering a leg injury, our pets are susceptible to emergencies just as people are. With a proper plan, education and supplies, you can be ready to care for your pet in their time of need until you can reach a veterinarian.

Start by creating a complete pet first aid kit. Helpful items to include include bottled water; a collapsible bowl; kibble/treats; medical/vaccination records; important phone numbers (veterinarian, emergency hospital, poison control, animal control); gloves; leash; collar; muzzle; tweezers; clean towel; blanket; thermometer; antiseptic wipes; flashlight; canine-specific aspirin/ibuprofen; Benadryl; cold compress; cotton swabs; burn-relief gel; gauze; tape; scissors; activated charcoal; saline solution; eyedropper/syringe; antibiotic ointment; wound closure; and styptic powder.

Your pet first aid kit should be accessible at all times and in a waterproof enclosure.

Common signs of a pet medical emergency include labored breathing; bleeding that does not stop after a few minutes; discolored gums (white, pale pink, gray or purple); straining to urinate; vomiting after eating or drinking; and being weak or unable to stand.

If your pet suffers an injury they might experience pain, fear and confusion, which can make them unpredictable. Refrain from hugging them. Keep your face away from their mouth. Aapply a muzzle if they attempt to bite (unless they are vomiting, then do not apply a muzzle). And ask for help if you need to move your pet.

Learn how to administer first aid to pets by attending a local event or workshop. Veterinarians, animal shelters and pet-related nonprofit organizations are ideal places to find a first-aid event or workshop in your area. Topics might include a pet-specific Heimlich maneuver, bandaging or how to handle seizures.

The American Red Cross offers a free Pet First Aid App, which provides information on what to do should an emergency happen with your pet. You can find the Pet First Aid App by going to redcross.org/apps or by searching for “American Red Cross” in app stores.

Before administering emergency care it is advisable to consult your regular veterinarian, an emergency veterinarian or the national animal poison control hotline (888-426-4235), depending on the situation.

Are you ready to take that winning photo of your pet? Here are a few tips:

Choose a location with quality lighting.

Natural light coming from a window is a great choice. If you decide to take photos outside, position yourself so that the sun is behind the camera rather than in front of it. Sufficient lighting ensures that your pet’s face can be seen well and helps avoid dark or grainy images.

           Remove any potential distractions.

Get rid of things both in the photo, so that it focuses on your pet, and in the general area that you are working in so that your pet is able to stay focused within frame and looking at the camera. Choose a background that isn’t too busy so that your pet remains the focal point of the photo.

Frame the shot so that your pet is not too far away.

Avoid leaving too much empty space above your pet if they are lying down. Shoot from the eye level of your pet rather than standing above them. If you are using your phone, zooming in can sometimes produce a grainy photo, so test it out beforehand and adjust the distance you are shooting from as necessary.

Keep your pet happy and relaxed.

This way, their ears are alert and their body language is casual. Try talking to them with a positive tone of voice or offering a treat to help encourage them to look in your direction.

           Let your pet’s personality shine.

If your dog has a favorite bandana, if your cat has a favorite toy, or if your pet has a favorite napping spot, embrace it and incorporate it into your photo session.

Take several shots so that you have options to choose from.

Try a few different angles. Mix it up with photos of your pet playing, sitting, lying down and exploring the world.

           Have fun!

Your pet’s experience is always most important. A positive photo session will result in better photos today and the next time you would like to capture a special moment with your pet.

Protect Your Pets from Ticks and Lyme Disease

Warmer weather certainly has us thinking about spending more time outdoors with our pets. However, it’s important to remember that as we become more active outside, so do ticks. When temperatures rise above freezing, tick activity significantly increases.

Ticks hang out in the grass and brush, and they will attempt to hitch a ride on passing animals or humans. Ticks can be on your clothes for hours before they decide to dig in to your skin. Once attached, they inject an anesthetic to prevent you from feeling their bite. Their saliva also contains an anti-clotting agent to keep the blood flowing and anchor the tick in place, making it harder to remove. If left in place, ticks can put the health of humans and pets at risk due to the diseases they carry, such as Lyme.

For our pets, ticks can hide in their fur and not only decide to attach to our dogs and cats but also to hitch a ride inside your home, where they can then make their way to human residents. This is why it’s very important to check your pet for ticks after every outing. If you discover one on your pet (or yourself), removing it as quickly as possible will minimize the chance of disease, as experts believe it takes several hours for a tick to transmit an infection.

Lyme disease in pets can cause swollen joints, joint pain, lameness, lethargy, fever, loss of appetite, swollen lymph nodes and more. In addition to Lyme, ticks also carry other illnesses that can cause serious symptoms such as ehrlichiosis, anaplasmosis and babesiosis.

Given the prevalence of ticks in our region, having your pets on flea and tick preventives is extremely important if they go outdoors. There is a wide variety of collars, topical treatments and oral preventives available. If you’re not sure which is best for your pet, ask your veterinarian for recommendations.

If you or your pet have a tick attached, it’s important to remove it properly. Shield your fingers with a rubber glove or a paper towel. With fine-tipped tweezers, get as close to the skin surface as possible, gently secure the tick and pull straight upward with steady pressure. Don’t squeeze tightly, crush or puncture the tick’s body, as this can squeeze infectious organisms into the bloodstream. Also, avoid petroleum jelly, hot matches or alcohol, as these can also irritate the tick, which could increase the chances of infection transmittal. Once you’ve removed the tick and disinfected the bite site, wash your hands with soap and water — and give your pet a treat for being a good patient.

The Animal Protective Foundation wishes you and your pets a warm and sunny spring. Remember to remain vigilant for ticks, and please celebrate the season safely.

Teaching Young People Responsibility through Pet Care

Having a family pet can bring great joy for children and create wonderful childhood memories. Even better are the developmental benefits for children that come with caring for a pet. Owning a pet, fostering a pet and volunteering for your local animal shelter or rescue are all excellent opportunities to teach our youth.

Pets require daily feeding, exercise and attention. By involving your children with these tasks, you can teach them the importance of caring for a living being as well as the importance of consistency. Explain to your child that their pet depends on them for their needs, just as a child depends on their parents. This can instill a sense of responsibility in your child. Include your child in trips to the veterinarian, dog groomer and pet food store so they see all aspects of proper pet care.

Creating a pet-care routine is an excellent lesson for children. A daily schedule that charts when each task will be completed shows children how to create a plan and how to stick to a plan. Learning the power of routines is of great value for our youth. This routine will also teach children to take responsibility for their behavior, as they will have set tasks to see through to completion each day.

Caring for pets also teaches empathy. Pets have needs and feelings that should be respected. By explaining to your children how important it is to have compassion for their pet, they will learn empathy. This includes happy days when their pet wants someone to play with, and difficult days when their pet isn’t feeling well and needs extra care.

Here at the Animal Protective Foundation we have many opportunities for youth to be involved with pet care. We always have many wonderful pets available for adoption including dogs, cats, rabbits and guinea pigs. We also need foster families to temporarily care for pets.

If owning or fostering a pet isn’t the right fit for your family, your child can still make a huge impact on the lives of pets in need while also learning responsibility through activities such as organizing a pet-supply donation drive, creating a fundraiser, making colorful “adopt me” posters to hang in our shelter and putting up APF event fliers in the community. We even invite children to read to our shelter cats!

Pet care is a wonderful way to build life skills in our youth. When determining how your child will be involved in the care of a pet, be sure to assign age-appropriate tasks, set realistic expectations and provide positive reinforcement to encourage continued responsibility.

Together we can make great life lessons for children, create wonderful lives for pets and develop the next generation of responsible pet owners, volunteers and advocates.

As the largest public spay/neuter clinic in the Capital Region, we are proud of our efforts to help pet owners responsibly sterilize their pets to lower the overpopulation trends we’re seeing.

However, if you look at the area’s shelter and rescue websites, it can be disheartening to see so many animals waiting longer to find their forever homes.

It is helpful to take a look back at the impact spay and neuter programs have had on animal shelter populations. In 1973, the Humane Society of the United States estimated that 13.5 million shelter animals were euthanized in the U.S. Thanks to aggressive efforts to spay and neuter in the ensuing years, by 2020 that number was down to nearly one million. Though we know how important spay and neuter is in controlling pet overpopulation, recent trends continue to indicate that the number of animals entering shelters is growing and outpacing the number of adopters.

Other statistics highlight the importance of timely spaying for female pets to prevent repeated pregnancies. But, even with our low-cost clinic and subsidized surgeries for low-income families, the cost of spaying or neutering a pet can still be a significant barrier for many pet owners. These expenses can deter individuals from doing what’s best for their pets, further exacerbating the overpopulation crisis.

I am happy to share that Animal Protective Foundation (APF) is relaunching a program designed to break down this barrier by offering free spay surgeries to any community member who surrenders a litter of puppies or kittens. Our new program, Fix Mom for Free, provides multiple benefits to pet owners including:

Healthy Smiles for National Pet Dental Health Month

By the age of 3, most pets will experience early evidence of periodontal disease. Without detection and treatment, periodontal disease in pets will worsen and can cause significant health issues ranging from oral infection, pain and tooth loss to kidney, liver and heart disease.

February is National Pet Dental Health Month. Veterinarians and pet health advocates across the country are shining a spotlight on the importance of proper pet dental care and how to treat common pet dental issues.

Just as with humans, periodontal disease in pets starts with plaque that hardens into tartar. Plaque and tartar below the gum line can lead to infection and damage to the jawbone and connective tissue. The best ways to prevent the effects of dental disease in pets are proper daily teeth brushing and regular veterinary dental visits. With consistent care, pets can have a healthy and happy smile that is free of periodontal disease.

Brushing your pet’s teeth can be challenging. Only attempt to brush your pet’s teeth if your animal does not show any signs of aggression or biting when being touched around the mouth. Before jumping right into using a toothbrush, start by gently working your finger into your pet’s mouth. Coating your finger with a small amount of peanut butter, cream cheese, wet food or flavored veterinary toothpaste can make this a fun experience for your pet.

Once your pet is comfortable with your finger, slowly migrate to a soft toothbrush or finger brush covered with a small amount of your pet’s favorite treat. As your pet becomes tolerant of the toothbrush, integrate a veterinary toothpaste.

Brush your pet’s teeth in gentle strokes, sticking with the outside, visible tooth surface. Never use human toothpaste or baking soda to brush your pet’s teeth, as some products are toxic to pets and can cause gastrointestinal upset. Keep brushing sessions short, and if your pet becomes irritated or aggressive it’s time to take a break.

Beyond the presence of plaque and tartar, additional risk factors that can contribute to periodontal disease include:

Breed: Overcrowding and rotation of teeth in purebreds, small dogs and those with short muzzles

Age: Periodontal disease worsens over time

Immune health: A healthy immune system promotes better dental health

The following signs indicate a dental health issue that should be evaluated by a veterinarian:

             Bad breath

             Damaged teeth

             Discolored teeth

             Plaque-covered teeth

Abnormal drooling, chewing or dropping of food

             Reduced appetite

Pain, bleeding or swelling of the mouth

             Irritable behavior

Your veterinarian will examine your pet’s mouth at their annual checkup. If periodontal disease is detected, your veterinarian will recommend treatment based on a disease severity scale of 0 to 4. Treatment typically involves a dental cleaning under anesthesia to remove plaque and tartar, and polishing of the teeth. Complete dental exams might include X-rays to check jaw and tooth root health. In some cases extractions may be recommended if the disease has progressed to the level of tooth damage and infection.

The Animal Protective Foundation encourages pet owners to set time aside during National Pet Dental Health Month to examine the dental health of your pets, start a tooth brushing routine and consult your veterinarian if you have any concerns about your pet’s dental health.

The Animal Protective Foundation (APF) proudly stands as the region’s largest public spay/neuter provider, thanks to our Community Spay/Neuter Clinic, which performed nearly 4,000 spay/neuter surgeries in 2024. But what impact does spay/neuter really have on pet overpopulation?

Back in 1970, before spaying and neutering became commonplace, 15 million shelter animals were euthanized in the United States in an average year. Fast forward to 2019 (the last “normal” year before the pandemic), and that number significantly dropped to just over a million. While still too high, this reduction is remarkable and due largely to aggressive spay/neuter campaigns including shelters sterilizing animals before adopting into their forever homes. While the APF continues to have one of the highest live release rates in the nation, we are seeing the numbers of euthanized shelter animals climbing 10-15% per year according Shelter Animals Count, a nationwide database which tracks euthanasia.

Beyond population control, numerous studies indicate health benefits from spaying and neutering our beloved pets. Spaying helps prevent uterine infections and reduces the risk of mammary tumors in females, while neutering can prevent testicular cancer and reduce the risk of prostate problems in males.

From our experience, many unaltered pets surrendered to the APF display behaviors that strain the bond between them and their owners. Spayed and neutered pets are less likely to engage in problematic behaviors such as roaming, spraying, and aggression, making them more pleasant companions.

In addition to immediate health and behavioral advantages, spaying and neutering also carry financial benefits. The costs associated with responsibly caring for an unplanned litter of puppies or kittens, including vaccinations, food, and veterinary care, can quickly soar into the thousands, along with other veterinary expenses such as an emergency C-section or post-delivery complications.

At the APF, our Community Spay/Neuter Clinic specializes in these procedures, providing high-quality spay and neuter services at an affordable cost.

“We perform many thousands of surgeries per year at APF, making us highly proficient in dealing with any type of sterilization, from tiny pediatric kittens to large breed female dog spays,” remarked Jackie Kucskar, DVM, APF’s Veterinary Medical Director. “Our team takes great pride in providing quality care to each patient and their family. We are passionate about using spay/neuter to reduce animal overpopulation, and to keep individual pets healthy, both medically and behaviorally. We also understand the importance of doing that at a cost that is within the financial means of our community members.”

There are no restrictions on who can schedule their pet for surgery at the Community Spay/Neuter Clinic, though qualifying pet owners can benefit from the New York State Animal Population Control Program, covering a substantial portion of the costs making it affordable for everyone.

Natural Disasters and Pets: Being Prepared When Crisis Strikes

As devastating wildfires rage through the Los Angeles region, the heartbreaking stories of suffering among both people and their pets serve as a stark reminder of nature’s destructive power. Having spent 15 years in California before moving to the Capital Region, I gained valuable insights about how animal welfare organizations operate during disasters and the importance of preparedness for pet owners that I’d like to share. In our region we are not immune to natural disasters including wildfires, floods, tornadoes, and more so emergency preparedness is crucial to protect your pets.

The animal welfare industry has evolved significantly in its disaster response capabilities. Within hours of a crisis, shelter and rescue groups outside affected areas typically transport adoptable animals to their facilities. This strategic relocation enables local shelters to focus on animals discovered during and after the disaster, while also providing temporary boarding for pets whose families have been displaced.

In disaster zones, shelter staff and volunteers work grueling hours, not only managing their facilities but also supporting pets housed in human evacuation centers. Beyond routine shelter care, they must treat numerous animals suffering from burns and other disaster-related injuries. Even after the immediate crisis subsides, shelters face the challenging task of caring for unclaimed animals or those surrendered by families who have lost their homes and can no longer care for them. The long-term recovery process often proves more demanding that the initial emergency response.

How can you prepare your pets for natural disasters?

To protect your pets during a disaster, consider these essential steps:

           Ensure Proper Identification:

           · Get your pet microchipped and maintain current registration

           · Provide a collar with your contact information, including cell phone number

           · Keep recent photos of your pet, preferably including yourself, for identification purposes

           Maintain Healthcare Requirements:

           · Keep vaccinations current, as most emergency boarding facilities require core vaccinations

           · Always make sure to have at least a week’s supply of medications available

           Take Immediate Action:

           · Bring outdoor pets inside as soon as you're aware of approaching danger

           · Block access to potential hiding spots where frightened cats might seek shelter

           · Research and bookmark pet-friendly hotels in your region, booking early if evacuation becomes necessary

           Prepare Essential Equipment:

           · Secure a properly sized carrier or crate that allows your pet to stand, turn around, and lie down comfortably, considering they may need to spend extended periods inside

Prepare a Go Kit that includes:

           - Leash and/or harness

           - Muzzle (if needed)

           - Seven-day supply of food and water

           - Written instructions for feeding, medications, and other needs

           - Can opener for canned food

           - Litter box and litter for cats

           - Comfort items (favorite toys, treats, bed)

           - First aid kit

For those wishing to support current relief efforts in California, consider donating to Pasadena Humane or the Los Angeles County Animal Care Foundation. Both organizations are doing amazing work leading the emergency response and an online donation will enable them to meet the extraordinary expenses associated with caring for these pets.

Autumn is my favorite season, and a great time to enjoy the beautiful hiking trails and outdoor spaces in the Capital Region. For the safety of your dog, it is important to remember one of the most important tools for responsible dog ownership: the leash. The Animal Protective Foundation (APF) strongly advocates for leash use to ensure the safety of both pets and people.

"Keeping your dog on a leash isn't just about following rules—it's about protecting your pet and respecting your community," says Kathy Snowden, ABCDT an instructor with the APF Canine Academy Program. "Even the most well-behaved dogs can be unpredictable in new environments or when faced with unexpected situations."

The temptation to let dogs run free, especially on seemingly empty trails, can be strong. However, the risks usually outweigh the benefits. Off-leash dogs may encounter wildlife, get lost, or even ingest harmful substances. They might also approach other dogs or people who are uncomfortable with or afraid of dogs, potentially leading to conflicts or injuries.

Legal considerations are another crucial aspect. Many areas, including most public spaces in Schenectady County, have leash laws that state that a leash can’t be longer than six feet. These regulations are in place to protect everyone—pets, pet owners and the public. Violating these laws can result in fines and, more important, put your dog at risk of injury or impoundment if caught running loose.

For those who want to give their dogs more freedom to run and play, there are safer alternatives to off-leash walking or hiking. Many communities have designated dog parks where pets can socialize and exercise off-leash in a controlled environment. The APF can provide information about local dog-friendly areas where your pet can safely enjoy some off-leash time.

Remember, using a leash is not just about control—it's about connection. A leash walk is an opportunity for bonding, training, and shared exploration between you and your dog. It allows you to guide your pet safely through various environments while reinforcing your role as their protector and leader.

For dog owners who find leash walking challenging due to pulling or other behavioral issues, the APF offers training classes to help. "Our Walking Workshops and other classes teach both dogs and their owners the skills needed for enjoyable, stress-free walks," explains Kathy Snowden. "We cover techniques to prevent pulling, improve focus and build a stronger bond between pet and owner. With proper training, leash walks can become a pleasant experience for everyone involved."

Even when your dog is on a leash, it is also important that they are licensed, have identification tags, and ideally a microchip in case they slip off the leash. The APF offers affordable microchip clinics several times a year.

As we strive to create a community where all companion animals are loved, respected and receive exceptional care, let's make leash use a non-negotiable part of responsible dog ownership. By doing so, we're not just complying with the law; we're actively contributing to a safer, more harmonious community for both humans and animals.

Owning a pet is a rewarding and special part of our lives. Studies show that pet owners are often happier and live longer than those without pets. For all that our loyal companions do for us, we should repay them by taking care of their health and wellness needs. Routine vaccination is a safe and effective way to keep them healthy and protect against serious, preventable diseases.

Vaccines are a mixture of inactive disease particles injected into a patient’s body. This injection stimulates the immune system to produce and store antibodies against that disease. This protects the patient from becoming seriously ill if they encounter the disease in the future. Some vaccines require boosters, as the initial dose may not produce sufficient antibodies, or antibody levels may fade over time.

Vaccines for animals have existed for over a century. The first were developed to protect livestock from disease and prevent the transmission of zoonotic illnesses, like rabies, from animals to humans. As technology has advanced and the roles of animals have evolved, we now have various vaccines for many different animal species.

Animals are vaccinated for several reasons. For a disease like rabies that can infect humans through animal bites and are 100% fatal if untreated, public health officials worldwide have mandated animal vaccination. For travelling animals, vaccination is required to prevent disease outbreaks in destination locations. Other vaccines protect our pets against highly contagious and devastating diseases.

Different vaccines exist for different species and lifestyles. Vaccines that all animals should receive are called “core vaccines.” For dogs and cats in the United States, the core vaccines are rabies and distemper. Rabies is a core vaccine because it is zoonotic and required by law; distemper is a combination vaccine against several serious diseases.

Other vaccines are recommended based on the animal’s lifestyle. For dogs, kennel cough (Bordetella), influenza, Lyme, and Leptospirosis (Lepto) vaccines are commonly recommended, as these diseases are contagious, potentially serious, and prevalent in our environment. Leptospirosis can even spread to humans through infected animal urine. For cats, the feline leukemia vaccine is usually recommended, especially for outdoor cats or those living with other cats. Always discuss the best vaccine plan with your veterinarian based on your pet’s lifestyle and risk factors.

Vaccines are very safe, generally well-tolerated, and effective. However, there is always a small risk of allergic reactions. The most common side effects are mild, such as a small lump or pain at the injection site or temporary tiredness. More serious, life-threatening anaphylaxis can occur, but it is very rare. As animal vaccine research progresses, efficacy increases while the chance of long-term or serious side effects decreases.

Vaccinating our pets is part of the “One Health” initiative, which merges human, animal, and environmental health to protect everyone. Many infectious human illnesses have been linked to animal sources, and human medicine frequently uses animal models to study diseases and develop new treatments. Given our close connection with animals, it is vital that we defend our pets against contagious diseases. Regular vaccination is the best way to protect us all and keep our world safe.

But when unexpected health issues arise, the costs can be overwhelming. That's where pet insurance comes in – but is it worth the investment? Let me share my experience with Hugo, my Labrador retriever, to help you decide.

We adopted Hugo knowing he had a severe heart murmur due to tricuspid valve dysplasia, a congenital heart defect where the tricuspid valve doesn't close properly, allowing blood to leak backward in the heart, which makes the heart work harder. The vets gave him just 18 months, but I'm happy to say he's now a healthy 6½-year-old. While his pre-existing heart condition isn't covered, pet insurance has still proven invaluable for us.

At 1½ years, Hugo needed surgery for an abscess, costing over $6,000. Our insurance (about $600/year) reduced our out-of-pocket expense to $900. This year, a $900 dental treatment was covered.

Over time, we've come out a little ahead with Hugo's insurance, but we've seen more significant savings with our other dogs. Our golden retriever, Gracie, needed $20,000 worth of surgeries before her second birthday for severe orthopedic issues including two full hip replacements.

In addition to two major surgeries earlier in his life, our previous Labrador retriever, Otis, required ongoing treatments for chronic conditions including allergies, arthritis, and myelopathy. Most pet insurance plans cover these chronic conditions, provided they weren't pre-existing when the coverage started. Regular medications, tests, and treatments for these conditions were all covered, significantly reducing our out-of-pocket expenses over the years.

According to the North American Pet Health Insurance Association, the average monthly cost for accident and illness coverage is $56.30 for dogs and $31.94 for cats. "Accident Only" (AO) plans cost about one-third as much. These AO plans typically cover incidents like foreign body ingestion, lacerations, and poisoning, but not illnesses. For both types of plans, premiums typically start low and increase as pets age and become more susceptible to illnesses.

When considering pet insurance, keep these factors in mind:

For us, pet insurance has provided significant savings as well as peace of mind, allowing us to focus on our pets' health rather than the cost of care. However, the decision to invest in pet insurance is personal. Every pet owner should consider how they'll handle unexpected health challenges. Being prepared can make all the difference in ensuring your pet receives the care they need when they need it most.

Summertime means barbeques, vacations, outdoor parties, and highly anticipated fireworks displays. With Fourth of July fireworks approaching, it’s important for us to remember the wellbeing of our furry friends during the dazzling displays. The loud noises and bright lights can cause anxiety and stress for our pets. Animals who are normally very laid back can become terrified during fireworks, trembling and showing signs of intense distress. Here are some helpful tips to keep your beloved companions safe during this festive time.

           Keep Them Indoors

: The idea of having your pup sitting on a picnic blanket with your family during a fireworks show may sound like fun, but loud explosions and big crowds could be your pet’s worst nightmare. We’ve all seen the dog at a fireworks show who is frantic, panting, drooling, whining, and trying to escape. Even when viewing the show from your backyard, Sparky may still try to desperately flee. It's vital to keep your pets indoors during fireworks displays for their protection. Ensure all doors, windows, and pet gates are securely closed to prevent any escapes.

           Identification

: In case your pet does escape, make sure their collars fit well and include up-to-date identification tags with your contact information – and make sure they are wearing them! For additional peace of mind, microchipping is highly recommended, as it provides a permanent form of identification.

Choose a quiet room and provide their favorite blankets, toys, and water. Close the windows and draw the curtains to reduce the impact of noise and flashes of light. This comforting space will help alleviate stress and create a sense of security for your pets.

           Mask the Sounds

: To minimize the impact of fireworks noise, turn on the television or play some calm music to help drown out the sound of fireworks. Background noise can provide a sense of comfort and distraction for pets, helping them cope with the outside commotion.

           Provide Distractions:

Engage your pets with interactive toys, puzzle feeders, or treat-dispensing items to divert their attention from the fireworks. Chew toys, stuffed kongs, or frozen treats can keep dogs occupied and mentally stimulated. For some dogs peanut butter or cheese may not be enough to get their mind off the noise – try something really tasty and special like tuna, a mashed up hot dog, or freeze-dried liver treats. For cats, offer interactive toys, new foods like sardines or chicken baby food, and hiding places to provide a sense of security.

           Stay Calm and Reassuring:

Pets are perceptive to our emotions, so staying calm and composed during fireworks is crucial. Act as a source of comfort by remaining at their side, speaking softly, and offering gentle strokes. Your reassuring presence will help your pets feel safe and secure during this stressful time.

           Calming Techniques

: Consider using calming techniques to help soothe your pets' anxiety. There are various products available, such as anxiety vests, aromatherapy sprays, or pheromone diffusers specifically designed to promote relaxation. Try these items before the day of the fireworks in a calm setting so your pet will associate them with relaxation. Your veterinarian can recommend the most suitable options for your pets' needs.

For most medications, the key is to give the dose an hour or two before the fireworks actually begin, as drugs can be less effective if an animal is already stressed.

Armed with these tips, you can help keep your furry friends calm and safe during this fireworks season. Your love and care will make a world of difference. Enjoy the festivities knowing that you have prioritized your pets' wellbeing and safety.
